From Freelance Copywriting to Award-Winning Novels: One Woman’s Unconventional Career Journey

I was a military spouse, so my job changed all the time.

studied English writing in school and fell into sales.”I worked in insurance sales and then I at one point was like, I’m done with sales. I’m never doing sales again. Eventually, I married a Marine and we traveled around the country, and this is where I had my first taste of Entrepreneurship. I was a Rover dog walker for a while.I had to work hard to build trust with my clients and promote my services. And then I realized that I went to school for writing. I love writing. I wanted to use it as my main source of income. So while at times I would do some part-time jobs to fund this, I was a freelance copywriter. I was doing quite well with that, but I also decided that while copywriting was great, it wasn’t really fun, so I started writing books. So I took the week to sort of become my own manager. If you’re writing books, you are running your own business, especially if you decide to go down the path I did, which was to join a publishing company. So while there was great support there, really good resources were available to me. I was still in charge of marketing. I was in charge of budgeting. I had to budget my time and finances carefully, while also managing my copywriting job and any part-time work. The hustle was very real but it was incredibly rewarding.

I now have 3 books published. One of them won an award, which was very exciting. I’ve just sent off a manuscript for my first novel to my editor, so that’s a little nerve-wracking. I want to see what she thinks of that. But the point is, I have never felt so confident in myself and also pleased with what I accomplished. I pursued my passion. I completed it. I’m getting good reviews on it. It was well worth going after. It certainly helped boost my sense of self, and it proved to me that I could go after things that seemed incredibly difficult.”

I play for the Phoenixville White Horse Women’s Rugby Club, and my rugby journey began when I attended West Chester University. Although I was initially apprehensive about rugby, I was intrigued by it and during the recruitment day, I was drawn to the rugby table. One of the players noticed my interest and threw a postcard at my head, challenging me to try it out. So, I showed up at practice the next day and have been playing ever since. That began my rugby career in 2013. Been playing on and off wherever I can. It was a beautiful way to learn how to become less self conscious.

I sort of struggled with not being really comfortable around new people, learning how to be less afraid and learning that there are a lot of things that I can do that I did not think I could.

My position in rugby is at lock, which means I am part of a group of three players that hold the scrum together. We work with two props and a hooker to engage the opposing team and win possession of the ball. Once we have the ball, my role is to tackle and stop the other team from advancing. I thoroughly enjoy this position and the challenge it presents. It is really fun!
